Clean Water Project in Northwest Syria
The Clean Water Project, implemented by Al-Wafa Relief and Development Organization, faces an urgent need to provide safe drinking water in northwest Syria. The region, which is home to more than 6 million people, including 1.7 million in camps, suffers from severe water shortages, affecting the health and stability of its residents. The project aims to alleviate this problem by providing clean drinking water to displaced families and protecting them from diseases and epidemics.
Project objectives
- Improving food security: Ensuring 500 families have access to clean water, enhancing food security and reducing the risk of disease.
- Reducing financial and psychological burdens: Reducing the costs and stress associated with securing water.
- Reducing health risks: Reducing the spread of waterborne diseases by providing safe drinking water.
Project justifications
- Declining support: The reduction in aid from the World Food Programme has led to increased poverty and hunger, with only 2.5 million of the 5.5 million beneficiaries receiving aid.
- Rising poverty and unemployment rates: The poverty rate is around 90%, and the unemployment rate is 88%, making it difficult for families to secure basic needs such as clean water.
- Lack of infrastructure: Many camps lack basic water and sanitation infrastructure, increasing health risks.
- Health concerns: The use of contaminated water has led to an increase in skin diseases, diarrhea and cholera, especially among the elderly and children.
Project Outputs
- Providing clean water: Providing 500 families with clean water for drinking and food preparation, with each family receiving 10 liters per day for 60 days.
